SWAMI MADHAVADASJI MAHARAJ

Yoga as an ancient discipline has come to us through the traditions which were developed during the period of history. Through the lineage of Yoga Teachers in the traditions Yoga has reached us.

Our spiritual grand-guru Paramahamsa Madhavadasa Maharaja, like other great Yogis, was a legendary figure with his Yogic powers. He came from the lineage of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu from Bengal. He lived in various parts of India for his spiritual development.
He mastered from various Gurus different Yogas such as Jnana, Raja, Hatha and Mantra. He stayed for twelve years for his Sadhana on Kanakeshwar hill near Mumbai and at last settled on the banks of Narmada at Malsar. He organised a centre of spiritual culture there for the upliftment of humanity.

He was the Chief of the Brihat Sadhu Samaj and had organised a congregation of Sadhus to deliberate on the ways and means for the upliftment of the society through the medium of Sadhus. He left his mortal coil in 1921 at the age of 121 years. He was of the opinion that if Yoga has to be propagated in 20th century it can not be done in the old fashion; it will have to be presented in modern scientific way. He used to impress this upon the minds of his disciples.

Two of his prominent disciples who carried his message further were Yogendra of Yoga Institute Santa Cruz, Mumbai and Swami Kuvalayananda of Kaivalyadhama, Lonavla. During the last phase of the life of Paramhamsa Madhavadasa Maharaj that Swami Kuvalayananda was blessed by his Holiness and trained him in Yogas of which he himself was the master. Swami Kuvalayananda owed his spiritual training in Yoga and his inspiration to serve the humanity through the propagation of Yoga along scientific lines to this Paramahamsa Madhavadasa Maharaj of Malsar.
